On Values

Paintings are usually expressed in three values (dark, middle and light) and into three planes (foreground, middle ground and background.)

Each plane should be dominated by a single value (dark, middle or light).

Different colors (hues) offer a different range of values. To understand this difference make test swatches to see what range of values is associated with a given color
